The Lurgy

Things have been pretty miserable in our house over the last few days because poor Bubs has been sick.  There’s nothing quite so horrible as seeing your child unwell; it makes me wonder how families cope when they have a seriously ill child because if I get upset watching Bubs with a fever, god knows what it must be like for them.  Mind you, while I am very glad that Bubs only has a minor throat infection that should easily be seen off with a course of antibiotics and plenty of TLC, it has to be said that even a minor illness takes its toll – and not just on the patient.

In fact, having a sick baby is nearly as bad as being sick yourself and having a little one under the weather is enough to cause flu symptoms in the average parent even before the dreaded lurgy gets contagious.  Exhausted from broken sleep caused by 2am trips across the hall to administer paracetamol, cold water and cuddles, I’ve got a headache from listening to him cry and I ache from carting him about on my hip because he refuses to be put down.  Of course while there’s a possibility Bubs has already passed the bug on to me via the litres of saliva he plasters all over my face and clothing during the course of an average day, I’m pretty sure I feel rough just because the Florence Nightingale routine is a bit exhausting.
The Hubber, on the other hand, has already broken out the painkillers, convinced that his throat is closing over and his head is about to explode.  Which can mean only one thing; Man Flu is coming.  And there I was thinking the last few days had been a challenge…

About Claire

Hello! I’m Claire and welcome to MumUnplugged! I started this blog in 2008 following the birth of my son; I was bored on maternity leave from my job as a magazine editor, and besides feeling a pathological urge to just write something, I wanted to put my own experiences as a first time mum out there for others to share. I’m just a normal mum like any other – I have good days and bad days, days when I feel confident in my ability to raise this little human I created and others when I wonder why on earth I ever thought I could handle it! The most important thing I’ve learned from becoming a mum is that there’s nothing like advice from other mums who’ve been in your shoes – and I hope that by reading my experiences and those of others, visitors to MumUnplugged will find inspiration, advice and support for their journey through motherhood. Through my career in publishing I’ve also developed a passion for trend-spotting and tracking down the latest products so you’ll also find lots of news, reviews, fashion, topical features and much more. I really hope you enjoy the site – don’t forget to check out our forums (coming soon!) and keep your eyes peeled for great competitions and giveaways. If there’s anything you’d like to see on MumUnplugged then I’d love to hear from you – email mumunplugged@googlemail.com, follow me on Twitter, check out the Facebook page - or just leave me a comment!

Hi, just came across your blog. Funnily enough baby illness is usually closely followed by man-flu in this house too! Mummy, however, never has time to get sick! Hope your lil Bub is on the mend soon.

I know, it’s really not fair! Thankfully this time I escaped; think it was just sleep deprivation – which of course takes a much bigger toll on Daddies!
