laugh a minute

Whenever I sit down to write this blog it’s usually because I’ve been reflecting on something deep and meaningful about being a parent, but it’s not all melancholy around here! In fact, as Bubs gets bigger our house is increasingly filled with laughter as he gets more and more hilarious and as we go to more and more extreme lengths to entertain him. His wee belly laugh is so cute and we often find ourselves laughing at him laughing – but aside from that there are so many other things he does that are funny.
For example, he LOVES the theme tune from the Poddington Peas (if you can’t remember this I’m jealous of your youth) and his favourite line is “keep it a secret now please!” at which point he normally has a little giggle. We downloaded it from the internet and it’s always guaranteed to make him smile when he’s cranky.
Another funny thing is that now he’s learned to work his baby walker I often let the dogs in while he potters around and he has devised a great game that involves waiting until one of the dogs is near a piece of furniture or in a corner and then charging them so they get trapped. Sadie has pretty much learned how to hide from him but Amber is still baffled by this small person on wheels and just looks at me as if to say ’save me!’. Once he’s got one cornered he loves to hold his wee hands up to be licked which is kind of gross – I have to be the lick police and wait with a baby wipe so that I can get the dog drool off before it goes into his own mouth, ick!
Feeding time is also getting more and more disgusting but also hilarious. Now I know why every parent has photos of their little darling plastered in food – it’s hard to believe somebody so small and innocent-looking could make that much mess. I often joke that Bubs is like Jesus because if I give him half a slice of bread I’ll turn around 2 minutes later and there will be enough crumbs on the floor to feed the five thousand. He loves his finger food but is getting a bit too curious about the spoon for my liking; he grabs it any chance he gets which means food all over his hands, which then ends up all over his clothes, up his nose and in his hair. Add to this the fact that most dried baby food is tougher than super glue and you can imagine how impressed he is when I’m trying to pick it out of his eyebrows…
He laughs his head off when either of us cough or sneeze, his favourite toy is my mobile phone, he jumps up and down with excitement when he sees a yoghurt pot coming his way and when we bath him more water ends up outside the bath than in it. We are having so much fun!

About Claire

Hello! I’m Claire and welcome to MumUnplugged! I started this blog in 2008 following the birth of my son; I was bored on maternity leave from my job as a magazine editor, and besides feeling a pathological urge to just write something, I wanted to put my own experiences as a first time mum out there for others to share. I’m just a normal mum like any other – I have good days and bad days, days when I feel confident in my ability to raise this little human I created and others when I wonder why on earth I ever thought I could handle it! The most important thing I’ve learned from becoming a mum is that there’s nothing like advice from other mums who’ve been in your shoes – and I hope that by reading my experiences and those of others, visitors to MumUnplugged will find inspiration, advice and support for their journey through motherhood. Through my career in publishing I’ve also developed a passion for trend-spotting and tracking down the latest products so you’ll also find lots of news, reviews, fashion, topical features and much more. I really hope you enjoy the site – don’t forget to check out our forums (coming soon!) and keep your eyes peeled for great competitions and giveaways. If there’s anything you’d like to see on MumUnplugged then I’d love to hear from you – email mumunplugged@googlemail.com, follow me on Twitter, check out the Facebook page - or just leave me a comment!
