splat!

That’s the noise a blob of baby rice makes when it hits your glasses at high speed, propelled by the latest in raspberry-blowing technology as expertly demonstrated by one small boy I know. Yes, folks, we are weaning and it’s a very messy business! I started off with some baby rice, which to be honest looks (and tastes) a bit like wallpaper paste but nevertheless Bubs seemed quite taken with it, slurping it off the spoon like he’d been doing it all his life. Then I decided to try some banana, which was also met with approval, so I thought i would chance my arm at some carrots. This proved to be something of a logistical nightmare; I boiled said carrots and squished them a bit with a fork before putting them in the food processor, but that didn’t puree them finely enough. So I thought maybe the smoothie maker would do the trick but nope, still too lumpy and now obstinately stuck to the blades of two hell-on-earth-to-clean kitchen appliances. So I had to resort to the old fashioned method of pushing the orange slop through a sieve which quite frankly gave me sore wrists the like of which I’ve not experienced since before Bubs came along and reduced our sex life to it’s current no-frills, infrequent status.
Anyway, that seemed to do the trick and so I mixed a bit of carrot with a bit of wallpaper paste and proudly presented it to Bubs…who promptly blew a raspberry and splattered the kitchen, and me, with food. I don’t think he is a big fan of carrots.
We’ve also tried poached pear and apple, and I’ve invested in a hand blender that can turn pretty much anything into a baby-friendly paste in seconds – genius! I can see myself getting quite obsessed with this, it’s so much fun I found myself wanting to puree everything. I’m not a big fan of cooking, especially when I don’t get to eat the results, but today I’m planning to cook some more carrots (organic ones, grown by my mate Nic’s husband Dave) and some sweet potato, just for the fun of blitzing them all up and freezing them in ice cube trays. God, it’s amazing what passes for entertainment in our house these days!

About Claire

Hello! I’m Claire and welcome to MumUnplugged! I started this blog in 2008 following the birth of my son; I was bored on maternity leave from my job as a magazine editor, and besides feeling a pathological urge to just write something, I wanted to put my own experiences as a first time mum out there for others to share. I’m just a normal mum like any other – I have good days and bad days, days when I feel confident in my ability to raise this little human I created and others when I wonder why on earth I ever thought I could handle it! The most important thing I’ve learned from becoming a mum is that there’s nothing like advice from other mums who’ve been in your shoes – and I hope that by reading my experiences and those of others, visitors to MumUnplugged will find inspiration, advice and support for their journey through motherhood. Through my career in publishing I’ve also developed a passion for trend-spotting and tracking down the latest products so you’ll also find lots of news, reviews, fashion, topical features and much more. I really hope you enjoy the site – don’t forget to check out our forums (coming soon!) and keep your eyes peeled for great competitions and giveaways. If there’s anything you’d like to see on MumUnplugged then I’d love to hear from you – email mumunplugged@googlemail.com, follow me on Twitter, check out the Facebook page - or just leave me a comment!
