things I said I’d never do

I have a lot of time to think since Bubs was born because I’m breastfeeding – I spend hours sitting on the sofa or lying on our bed while he gorges himself on milk, which on one hand means I never get anything done but on the other means that at least I have an excuse to lounge around watching crap daytime telly and contemplating the boundaries of my new post-baby world. So today I got to thinking about all the things I said I wouldn’t do when I became a parent and was quite amused at how much the fantasy differs from the reality. Such as:

1. I’ll never have the baby in our bed – too dangerous. This went out the window before we even left hospital; after a c-section i physically couldn’t get out of bed so the only way Bubs was getting fed was if he was in there too. These days I often wrestle with myself – I know if he was in there all the time I would get lots more sleep but even with UNICEF’s new missive saying it’s OK to sleep with your baby as long as you’re not drunk or on drugs (and let’s face it, who would have the energy to do either with a newborn around?) I still worry about safety. Not to mention the fact that our sex life – currently terminal but hanging in there – would die a complete death. So he stays in the cot, most of the time anyway.

2. I won’t be one of those boring women who can only talk about the baby. Erm, hello? Not content with boring everyone I know about him, I’m now boring all of you as well…

3. I won’t start referring to myself as Mummy…well, at least I don’t do it in public, eh?

About Claire

Hello! I’m Claire and welcome to MumUnplugged! I started this blog in 2008 following the birth of my son; I was bored on maternity leave from my job as a magazine editor, and besides feeling a pathological urge to just write something, I wanted to put my own experiences as a first time mum out there for others to share. I’m just a normal mum like any other – I have good days and bad days, days when I feel confident in my ability to raise this little human I created and others when I wonder why on earth I ever thought I could handle it! The most important thing I’ve learned from becoming a mum is that there’s nothing like advice from other mums who’ve been in your shoes – and I hope that by reading my experiences and those of others, visitors to MumUnplugged will find inspiration, advice and support for their journey through motherhood. Through my career in publishing I’ve also developed a passion for trend-spotting and tracking down the latest products so you’ll also find lots of news, reviews, fashion, topical features and much more. I really hope you enjoy the site – don’t forget to check out our forums (coming soon!) and keep your eyes peeled for great competitions and giveaways. If there’s anything you’d like to see on MumUnplugged then I’d love to hear from you – email mumunplugged@googlemail.com, follow me on Twitter, check out the Facebook page - or just leave me a comment!
